When I first started driving my 2014 Stingray, I was a little put off by the throttle response. It took a long time to get into the power band and seemed sluggish off the line. It required more pedal than I liked to get the car moving off the line. It just didn’t seem like the 6.2 liter wanted to do anything but gently get into cruising mode. I am a big fan of snappy throttle response, so I started researching this “problem” with the C7 Corvette. I found that this was solved by a better throttle body and/or a throttle controller. I happened upon Soler Performance and decided to give their TC a try. Basically, what it does is sit between the wiring harness to the gas pedal and the pedal itself to change what the computer sees as the pedal is pressed. It makes the throttle response much snappier and linear throughout the pedal range. You can choose from dozens of levels ranging from OEM up to Ludicrous and anything in between.
Installation:
Since it was a nice December day, I decided to uncover the Corvette to install this Christmas present to myself. Installation is simple, only requiring a flat blade screwdriver and a 10mm socket. Simply pop off the rubber cover to reveal the 10mm bolt holding the pedal assembly. Pop the pedal assembly off and then disconnect the wiring harness from the pedal by releasing the red locking tab and pull it apart. It does take some coaxing. Install the throttle controller between the wiring harness and the pedal connector, then attach the box to the carpet with velcro or somewhere else convenient. I chose not to use the small LCD and instead connected over Bluetooth with the Soler Prf app. One can change to any setting they want using the app and I didn’t want to run the wire to the center console tray.
Initial Impressions:
I started on SP6, sport mode level 6, and was instantly rewarded with throttle response and breaking the tires loose. The hesitation was completely gone and the car had a whole new personality. Initial take-offs were a pleasure and the car performed like it had a smooth-breathing V8 that was ready to rumble. I no longer felt like the car was lagging or unresponsive. I backed it down a little bit to SP4 and it was about what I was looking for with daily driving. I didn’t even bother with Track Mode or Ludicrous Mode since I am sure the tires would be hating me.
One thing I did notice is that you will enter performance shifting mode very quickly and the car will be ready for action with far less effort on the throttle. It truly is an amazing experience and I was very happy with the results for the money spent. It alleviated any disappointment I had with the low-end, daily driving tasks.
I recommend this purchase to anyone. Don’t bother with the cheap $90 ones on Amazon. I trust Soler because this place knows what they are doing. My spring plans include installing the 91mm Soler throttle body to complete this upgrade process. I don’t think it is entirely necessary to get the throttle body, but I wanted to anyway so I could be cool. I am not going to get to it this year since it snowed today. The Sledgehammer is back under covers on a battery tender.
